What's the role?

We're looking for a Principal Software Engineer who is passionate about software development, learning new technologies and embracing change in a fast moving environment. You will be the first member of a new team we are building in China, so if you're a technical leader who wants the opportunity to shape a team and its direction, this is the role for you!

As a Principal Software Engineer at GfK your focus, primarily is on people & delivery, setting the direction, strategy and management of multiple projects. You’ll lead and coach engineers to build, improve, and maintain critical digital services relied upon by the GfK business and our clients.

Your key areas of impact will be:

  • using your deep technical and organisational skills to understand and solve service reliability issues whist reflectively finding improvements in day-to-day processes
  • building and leading a team of software and DevOps engineers to develop, maintain and support a range of substantial client-focussed and internal operational services
  • planning our workforce and recruiting engineers, building a strong technical talent pool; coaching and mentoring as necessary
  • encouraging a vibrant and engineering led culture in the China Tech & Data office
  • taking a hands-on role with engineering delivery where necessary, blending your leadership and technical skills to achieve team objectives

What you'll need to be successful

We’re looking for people who can bring together deep technical expertise and strong management skills, as a principal your focus will be more on team and stakeholder management responsibilities whilst supporting delivery and developing those around you. You’ll have great experience:

  • leading technology teams, with a background overseeing complex technical projects
  • in a wide range of technical systems, covering cloud hosted solutions developed on the Microsoft tech stack, and maybe experienced with Node.js, React, Java and Python (secondary)
  • supervising the work of others, providing coaching, mentoring and/or line managing other engineers
  • of modern software design principles from proposal through to implementation
  • in agile development using continuous integration principles
  • coordinating delivery across multiple systems, as well as defining, documenting and testing technical solutions

Key responsibilities

1. Global business applications localization support

  • Tech support for our latest global platform (gfKnewron) localization – understand local market requirements, needs and working with tech team to deliver localization for business success

2. Local business applications operations support and maintenance (include uptime, backup, disaster recovery, etc.)

  • Application administration role for all local applications like our leader panel production system, mobile application and radar system etc.
  • Production system and data back up ensuring business continuity and stability
  • Local application deployment in local or cloud server
  • Support of mobile application v2.0 development
  • Leader panel system application support / routine maintenance
  • Support other local application initiatives like API/Reporting system/local digital product development
  • Manage application outage/issues trouble shooting in collaboration with IT Services, according to predefined SLA
  • Oversee and Lead technology initiatives in China, inclusive of overall project management, scoping, budgeting and procurement.
  • Liaison between global technology, product and local management team in business applications area.

3. Data Security, Protection and Privacy compliance from business applications perspective in China

  • Personal information protection law (PIPL) – liaise with global tech team on system architecture and design to comply with local law
  • Make sure ISO27001 implementation compliance and regular internal audit
  • Support and ensure local applications comply to GfK Information Security compliance and standards
  • Implement and govern application development lifecycle and security best practices as per global guidelines in China

Background / Profile

  • Proficient in English and Chinese
  • Software Architecture and Design skills
  • Sound knowledge in application security
  • Knowledge/Experience in Market Research Applications/Workflow
  • Experience working in agile framework/methodology environment/teams
  • Good interpersonal skills (requires interaction with business, operations and supporting functions)
  • Team player and self-motivated
  • Over 5 years IT/application development or related domain experience 
  • Basic knowledge in IT infrastructure, network setup and design
  • Familiar with ISO27001 standard and implementation
