Map of the Month: GfK Single households, Germany 2022

GfK's Map of the Month for February shows the regional distribution of single households in Germany in 2022.

Valentine's Day is just around the corner - but with a share of 40.9 percent, single households are the most common household type in Germany, followed by multi-person households without children (30.5 percent) and multi-person households with children (28.6 percent). But where in Germany do most people live alone?

According to the latest GfK study on demographics, more than one in two people live alone in the Regensburg urban district, with a share of 52.7 percent, putting the Upper Palatinate city 29 percent above the national average and in first place among all urban and rural districts. The urban districts of Erlangen (52.5 percent) and Leipzig (52.0 percent) follow in second and third place. Percentage-wise, the fewest single-person households are found in the district of Cloppenburg, where only 29.3 percent of all households are occupied by just one person.
