Job Description

GfK has a long-term vision to provide best in class digital products and services that help their clients make better decisions, now, and in the future. To help to deliver on this vision, we need a Design Manager to support our rapidly growing design team and be part of the digital transformation of GfK.

This role is critical to empower our design team: how we work together, how we get work done and how the work we do creates impact - for our users and our colleagues. As Design Manager you will work with designers, leaders and key internal partners to establish a highly efficient design team and processes that deliver high-quality outputs for our product teams and our users.

Core responsibilities:

  • Evangelise design thinking and design across the product org and beyond - act as an advocate for client-centered design.

  • Raise awareness of design team and strategic value of work outside of our team.

  • Identify ways to build a strong design team culture and encourage better collaboration and knowledge sharing

  • Establish strong cross-functional relationships, acting as the bridge between product, engineering and commercial.

  • Build processes to improve flow across various functions within design org.

  • Understand roadmaps, across different functions, and oversee prioritisation of design resources across the spectrum of work.

  • Standardise systems and tools across design org - focusing in particular on UX - ensuring they're adopted and used consistently.

  • Define clear metrics of success, how we will measure these and ensure we deliver on them.

  • Support Head of Design to make sure we have quality people in all roles, identifying and managing skill sets.

  • Mentor and develop designers - with or without direct line management authority.

Desired skills and experience:

  • Extensive experience in using UX/UI design best practices to design solutions and lead effective teams

  • Experience leading a team of designers (as direct reports or in a similar role) – managing workload, prioritisation, performance and processes 

  • Advanced knowledge of user-centred design (UCD), planning and processes

  • Worked in a similar or senior design role within an in-house design team, working on a digital product or service

  • Demonstrated experience building, embedding and measuring performance and culture of a design team

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, able to clearly articulate concepts, ideas and requirements so they are understood by technical & non-technical teams 

  • Strong persuasion and relationship building skills to influence others without authority and encourage collaboration between stakeholders 

  • Advanced presentation and facilitation skills, able to present ideas/concepts to stakeholders with clarity and confidence  

  • Proactively voices own point of view e.g. in group settings, with senior stakeholders or participating in decision making and actively gathers opinions of others. Able to defend point of view effectively and leads robust debate to accelerate decision making.  

  • Capable of resolving challenges independently, escalating only when appropriate 

  • A team player, able to work collaboratively with other members of the team and autonomously when required 

  • Excellent self-organisation and ability to plan own work in line with the broader team plans and priorities 

  • Good competency with common Design software for the creation of artefacts and presentations, proactively seeking new tools and skills 

  • Able to confidently convey purpose, value and concepts of design-lead product development to non-design team members and influence without conflict 

  • Contributes to strategy development, community building and knowledge sharing within Design, encouraging others to do the same
