Last year, over 10 billion euros were spent online in Belgium, hitting a new record. This continues the upward trend in ecommerce seen in 2015 and 2016.
In 2017, 8.4 million Belgian consumers shopped online at least once, representing 87 million purchases and spending € 10.05 billion. The most popular online category of 2017 was ‘airplane tickets & accommodations’, where 86% of the overall spend was online. Online food, despite being still a small category, grew the strongest, with the share of online spending increasing 27%, from 1.1% to 1.4%.
The ecommerce market in Belgium is continuously monitored via the BeCommerce Market Monitor, which is conducted by GfK for BeCommerce, with the support of Google, PostNL and Worldline.
