Nearly a third of the online population across 17 countries does gardening or yard work either daily or weekly, according to data just published by GfK. This is made up of a quarter (24 percent) who garden at least once a week, and a further seven percent who garden every day or most days. This slightly outweighs the 24 percent who say that they never do any gardening.
On average, a quarter of people entertain guests in their home either daily or weekly, and a further third entertain monthly. Less than one in ten people say that they never entertain guests in their home. These insights are from an online survey across 17 countries conducted by global researchers, GfK, with the definition of ‘entertain guests’ left open, so it covers everything from dinner parties to having friends around to watch a film or sports or simply to chat over a coffee.
The positive mood among European consumers has also continued into the second quarter of 2017. After the nine-year peak at the beginning of the year, the consumer climate has remained at a high level for the EU 28 and closed at 19.1 points at the end of June. Overall, the results of the GfK consumer climate study are again quite mixed for Europe in the second quarter of 2017.

A third of people (34 percent) in an online survey of 17 countries firmly agree that they “find it difficult to take a break from technology (my mobile device, computer, TV, etc.), even when I know I should”. This compares to less than half that number (16 percent) who firmly disagree that it is difficult to take a break.

2017 started off on a positive note, with a total increase in the non-food sales of 1.4%, compared to the same period last year. Although the year 2016 rounded up a negative growth of 0.7%, it concluded on a positive momentum in its last quarter, of +2% compared to Q4 2015. Let us hope that this positive trend is here to stay, for a great 2017! The comparison is based on the sum of all non-food markets measured by GfK POS Measurement.
During the first quarter of 2017 the IT and Office Equipment market increased in value by almost 2%, for a total value of close to 500 Mio €.
For the 6th year in a row we are facing a decline in the first quarter of the year within the Consumer Electronics business. Whereas in Q1/2011 the CE category reached a turnover of more than 400 Mio € it wasn’t able to attain the mark of €230mio in Q1/2017?!
Once again we saw green figures in white goods in Q1 2017: every product group advanced in units and value. The washing category, last year’s fastest growing, again accounts for the biggest gain. Cooling holds off cooking as second best performing category.
The telecom market had a positive start in Q1 of 2017 with a turnover growth of 3.5%. However, market growth is slowing down if compared with the growth rates of the first quarters of the last 3 years. We are a step closer to saturation.
